With a new name and location, officials want to spur increased interest in a community farmers market in Windsor, rather than relying solely on business from highway passersby.

Opening June 13 for the 2009 season, the Windsor SQUARE Farmers’ Market will operate at 18 Duke St. next to the Windsor Public Library from 8:30 a.m. to noon or until vendors are sold out each Saturday.
“I really just wanted the market to sound more family-oriented and more inviting,” said Marci Parrish, Isle of Wight market manager.

“I want the Windsor residents to really embrace it, have something to be proud of and know that they have a great farmers market each week.”

Parrish said the market will offer locally-grown produce, baked goods, hand-crafted products and specialty items. Patrons of the market will also find free horticulture information.

“Non-profit organizations can sell their products for fundraisers at the market,” she said.

For now, Parrish is still looking for volunteer musicians or bands interested in playing at the market as well as vendors.

Produce sold at the market has to have been grown within 100 miles of the area, Parrish said. Potential vendors can contact Parrish for an application and rules. Windsor market vendors will pay $40, and this flat fee is for anyone interested in selling at the market.

The Windsor SQUARE Farmers’ Market will operate from June 13-Oct. 31. For more information, visit www.iwus.net/agriculture or call Marci Parrish at 375-3031.
