Cooking with ham gives green beans just the right taste

Greens bean, whether called string beans or snaps, stand out as a popular garden vegetable and provide plenty of vitamins and nutrients such as calcium, Vitamins A, C and K and potassium. This green veggie sold frozen, canned and fresh makes the perfect side dish for any entrée.

For a simple, yet tasty, Southern-style green bean dish, here’s what you’ll need to prepare them:

2 pounds of fresh or frozen green beans
1 teaspoon of freshly ground pepper
1 teaspoon of salt
½ cup of sugar
1  12-ounce ham hock or cured ham chunk

For starters, you’ll need a large pot or a Dutch oven, and if you’re using freshly-picked
green beans, you’ll want to snap off and discard the ends of the beans. Then, wash the beans thoroughly.

Once washed, place the green beans in your pot, adding just enough water to cover them.

Add the pepper, salt, sugar and ham hock or chunk and cook on medium heat for about one hour. Keep in mind that the ham hock or chunk already has salt, so the additional salt may not be needed. The amount of salt used should be based on your tastes and/or health needs.

Once the green beans are cooked, enjoy them with steak, fried or baked chicken, fish or pork.
