Farm, garden centers are now stocking spring supplies

By Bobbie Whitehead

Farm and garden centers have begun stocking vegetable and flower seed as well as grass seed, fertilizer and plenty of gardener’s tools, pots and lawn décor.

Though the weather in Virginia may turn chilling cold then warm up to spring-like temperatures, growers ready to begin planning their gardens and fields can find supplies and new products, especially ones for enhancing lawns and gardens.

For growers wanting to buy fruit and veggie seeds locally for their greenhouses or garden, Farmer Joe’s Greenhouse & Garden Center in Surry has plenty of supplies for every type of grower, whether he or she tends a small backyard garden, several greenhouses or acres of fruits and vegetables.

“We’re starting to fill up our greenhouse with goodies for spring,” said Marge Holler, co-owner of Farmer Joe's Greenhouse and Garden Center. “We have seed starting supplies, and we have a geranium crop and spring pansies started.”

Farmer Joe’s Greenhouse & Garden Center has seed, supplies and Pam Ballard bird baths.

The center has peonies and Bleeding Hearts, among other flower varieties, Holler said.
“We’re just starting to get things rolling,” she added.

Holler already had a display of Wyatt-Quarles seeds purchasable by the ounce. For example, growers can find beet and cabbage seeds, among others. The center also had a full line of packaged Wyatt-Quarles fruit and vegetable seeds for planting anything from early summer squash, straight cucumbers, and heirloom tomatoes to several pumpkin varieties.

For customers interested in growing flowers or having a container garden, Farmer Joe’s always has Italian clay pots available, and the center has American-made bird baths that many gardeners, she said, want to add to their list of spring supplies.

Farmer Joe’s also carries the Pam Ballard collection of bird baths with the lavender planter bowl being one of the popular ones. Ballard is an artist from Zanesville, Ohio, Holler said. Another Farmer Joe’s favorite in the spring is the Music of the Spheres wind chimes.

In Courtland, Grayson & Emma’s Garden Spot now has peat pots and glass watering globes with wider mouths, making them easier to fill, according to the market. The new globes also have a terra cotta base.

In addition, growers can find watering cans in pink, orange, maroon, blue, green and yellow.

Also, Neil Drake, owner of Grayson & Emma’s, now has grass seed and fertilizer.

Over in Isle of Wight County, the Windsor True Value Hardware, just off Route 460 in downtown Windsor, has 50 percent off on its winter vegetable plants – several cabbage varieties and some kale, among others were available. Also, the Windsor center has wind chimes, watering globes, similar to those in Courtland, along with traditional plant and garden fertilizers and just about any size pot available for flowers, trees, herbs or produce.

Growers can find a variety of greenhouse, farm or garden centers in Suffolk – some already stocking various seeds and fertilizers.

New growers interested in beginning a spring garden or planting a field of crops can find seed and supplies now at various area shops or they can order catalogues from large seed companies such as Burpee and Gurney's that are featuring some of the latest fruit and vegetable varieties available.
