All-America Selections, an international testing organization for flower and vegetable varieties, has announced another 2010 vegetable winner.

The bell pepper “Cajun Belle” was selected as the second vegetable winner this year and is described as having an “excellent combination of heat and sweet,” All-America Selections reports.

Cajun Belle produces “a high yield of peppers due to vigor and excellent fruit set,” and the peppers grow to about 2-by-3 inches and weigh about one ounce, according to the All-America Selections description.

When changing colors, the peppers turn from green to a scarlet then a deep red color, AAS found.
The plants grow to two feet in height and width and are compact with “a perfect stature for containers,” as noted in the description.

An early-maturing plant, Cajun Belle, a native to American tropical regions, germinates in about 5-10 days, and gardeners growing the pepper will need to sustain warm temperatures, about 65-70 degrees, when initially germinating the plant, according to AAS growing instructions.

“When grown at AAS Trial grounds, ‘Cajun Belle’ showed no disease problems,” reports All-America Selections, an organization established in 1932.

Compared to the “Mexibell” variety, Cajun Belle grows quickly with mature peppers in about 60 days and shows disease tolerance, according to All-America Selections.

Bred by Grow Star L.L.C., Cajun Belle is available to seed companies through PanAmerican Seed Company, a Chicago breeder and producer selling to retail and wholesale distributors worldwide.

The 2010 All-America Selections vegetable winner also included the F-1 Hybrid watermelon variety called “Shiny Boy,” and the flower winners included Echinacea purpurea “PowWow Wild Berry,” Marigold F1 African “Moonsong Deep Orange,” Zinnia “Double Zahara Cherry” and Zinnia “Double Zahara Fire.”
