Growers already planning their flower and vegetable gardens for the New Year may want to look for the 2010 All-America Selections’ new variety winners.

All-America Selections, an international testing organization established in 1932 that tests new varieties of flowers and vegetables, chose an F-1 Hybrid watermelon variety called “Shiny Boy” as the vegetable winner.

Some of the Shiny Boy characteristics that judges favored were its “sweet flavor and crisp texture,” All-America Selections reports.

Also, AAS describes the variety, which has red flesh and dark seeds, as one that offers a high yield and earlier maturation.

Bred by Known-You Seed Company, based in Taiwan, the Shiny Boy watermelon is described as a “vigorous hybrid plant” that “grows up to 12 feet,” according to the AAS description. The watermelon is said to be able to tolerate severe weather and grow in vertical gardens. When planted, Shiny Boy germinates in 7-14 days and is ready to harvest in 90 days from seed, and when grown from transplants, Shiny Boy is ready for harvest in 75 days, as noted in the description.

Compared to the “Sweet Favorite,” “Delta” and “Starlight” watermelon varieties, Shiny Boy also has a dark green rind with wide stripes and a dark red flesh, reaches up to 20 pounds, sometimes larger, and tolerates well most insects and diseases, according to the AAS.

“This AAS Winner can be grown successfully in any geographic region with warm summer growing conditions,” All-America Selections announced in its 2010 winners’ release.

The 2010 All-America Selections flower winners included Echinacea purpurea “PowWow Wild Berry,” Marigold F1 African “Moonsong Deep Orange,” Zinnia “Double Zahara Cherry” and Zinnia “Double Zahara Fire.”
